Description
Levetiracetam is an antiepileptic medication used in the treatment of epilepsy, a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures. It is also used in the management of certain other conditions associated with abnormal electrical activity in the brain.
Levetiracetam is used as monotherapy or adjunctive therapy in the treatment of partial-onset seizures, myoclonic seizures, and generalized tonic-clonic seizures in adults and children over the age of one.
It may also be used off-label for conditions such as neuropathic pain, bipolar disorder, and migraine prophylaxis, although its effectiveness for these indications is less well-established.
The exact mechanism of action of levetiracetam is not fully understood, but it is believed to modulate synaptic neurotransmission by binding to synaptic vesicle protein 2A (SV2A) in the brain. This interaction may contribute to the drug’s antiepileptic effects by reducing abnormal neuronal firing and hypersynchronization.
