Description
Mercaptopurine, also known as 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP), is a medication primarily used in the treatment of certain types of cancer, particularly acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). It belongs to a class of drugs known as antimetabolites, which work by interfering with the synthesis of DNA and RNA in cancer cells, ultimately leading to their death. Mercaptopurine is also used in the treatment of some autoimmune diseases, such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. It is typically taken orally in tablet form.
